Anytime Orienteering

Orienteering Hutt Valley has local maps available to download and use so you can do some orienteering or some practise at a time that suits you.

In public places such as city and regional parks we have a mixture of permanent courses, sprint adventure race, mini-rogaine (P-Max), beginner MTBO (B-Max), and some of our DIY (U-Max) courses available. There are also virtual courses (using MapRun) and you can design your own.

Permanent Courses

The control points may be specially inscribed posts, or plaques fixed to a fence or building, or distinctive landmarks.

You download and print copies of the map from this website, or perhaps obtain from a nearby agent such as information centre or camp warden, and you look after yourself.

We've got three courses available and we're trying to get our city councils to install more:

Virtual Courses

You probably haven't been to ALL of our events, and we've put a lot (over 100) of the map files on the website. If you can cope with not having control markers out there, you can print a map and run the course. On some of these courses you can even use the cellphone app MapRun and the phone records your time and visits to each point. Have a look at our MapRun Guide page for getting started or read our short guide for the HVHS orienteering team.

Browse our list of virtual courses. Orienteering Wellington has a similar approach with their list of OW Solos. Our map below is work-in-progress:

Design Your Own Course

You can also download the "blank" map and design your own course. This would suit those with a bit of experience who have "used up" the ready-made courses. We've listed about 15 of these. If you want the map underneath one of the virtual courses above, we can take the circles off for you. Browse the list of downloadable maps.

Feedback please!

We want to know if you like these maps and courses! Contact us with a 'General' enquiry mentioning "anytime orienteering" in the subject and let us know the name of your group (e.g. "Smith family"), the number of people in it, which course you did and when, and any other comments. We'll try and reply with a suggestion about the next club event in the Greater Wellington area that we think would be good for you.
